Sweet almond oil (botanical name Prunus amygdalus var. dulcus ) is one of the most popular essential oils and is used as a carrier/base oil in aromatherapy. The oil is extracted from the seeds of the almond and tends to be extremely creamy / oily in texture, which makes it a superb emollient. The oil has a very light, sweet, nutty aroma and is absolutely clear with an almost imperceptible tinge of yellow.
As all-purpose base oil, Sweet Almond oil is capable of carrying/diluting almost any other essential oil. This health product is said to be beneficial for individuals who suffer from a dull complexion, itching, inflammation and muscle pain.
One way of enjoying the benefits of Sweet Almond oil is through vaporisation. The best way to achieve this is by diluting five to ten drops of the oil in water. This is then put over a burner fuelled by a tea candle. The amount of oil used will depend on the size and ventilation of the room used. It is recommended that burning tea candles should be in clear view at all times to minimise the fire hazard.
Sweet almond may also be enjoyed in aromatic baths and as massage oil.
