The hot fruit of cayenne has been used as medicine for centuries upon centuries. It was considered helpful for various conditions such as stomachaches, cramping pains, and gas. Cayenne is still also traditionally used in herbal medicine as a circulatory tonic.
Cayenne can also be used to treat rheumatic and arthritic pains. When rubbed on the skin it causes a counterirritant effect - a counterirritant is something which causes irritation to the area that it is applied thus it distracting the nerves from the original irritation.
